    "Canadian National FA-1 diesel-electric locomotive - No. 9400"
In 2000 Canada launched the Commemorative Transportation 20 Silver Dollar Series to Honor the Canadian Transportation History.
As the second largest country in the World Canada's territory covers 10,000,000 square kilometers (3.8 Million square miles)- a rugged grandeur that represented a significant challenge to the early
pioneers who sought to conquer this vast domain. As Canada entered the 20th century, it had essentially overcome this geographic barrier, but a new challenge quickly emerged - the relentless pursuit of technological innovation.
"Mastering the power of diesel locomotion, the FA-1 (1950)
    "
" We are confident that these locomotive are the answer to the steep grades,  sharp curves of the Montreal-Chicoutimi run."
It was April 12th, 1950 when Sir Frederick Carson, Executive Vice-President of Montreal Locomotive Works proudly unveiled the first streamline diesel-electric locomotive to be built in Canada - The FA-1 No. 9400. It was an impressive sight. Certainly this sleek and modern locomotive could rise the challenge.
The 9400 performed well. in 1956, it suffered a serious collision and its original cab was replaced with a more modern locomotive. By the time the 9400 retired in 1968, it had undergone numerous overhauls and looked much different than it had when it was first built. Regardless, in 1998 the Canadian Railroad Historical Association managed to restore the 9400 to its late 1950 look.
Although a total of 412 FA-1 engines were built, only four are
believed to exist in North America. One is engine 9400, the only one of its kind in Canada. It's on display at Exporail, the Association's museum in Delson/St-Constant, Québec, Canada.
Canadian artist John Mardon recreates the 1950's signature look of the FA-1 9400 locomotive for the reverse of the 2003 Twenty Dollar Sterling Silver coin. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Dora-Pedery Hunt.
